Good morning everyone!! I hope ya'll had a good night's rest and are ready for today's journey. Today we will be visiting....
SUNDAY 16 JUNE 2019
To start our day off, we got up bright and early so we could make it to the nearest ward house for 9 am church.
Dang, the humidity brings out my curls. It's probably the only thing I like about humidity. |
Sunday getting ready for church selfies. |
After church, we went back to camp to change and get ready for our day. The plan for the day was to visit Arlington National Cemetery and the Washington D.C. Temple.
Arlington was our first stop.
This is by far, and hands down the biggest cemetery I have ever been in. One could easily get lost in there. |
Visitor center photo that one of the kids took. I remember my Grandpa Weidenheimer had Taps played at his funeral. |
Tiger Lily was quite happy with the braids I gave her. Apparently we needed a picture of it in the cemetery. |
Cemetery selfie. |
They had lots of cool statues. |
And lots of graves. |
We made our way up to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. |
We got there just in time to see the changing of the guard. |
It was really interesting to watch. The soldier has a very specific, slow, and methodical walk he does. I |
Pre-Covid crowds. I love the Greek architecture and feel to the whole area around the Tomb of the Unknown. |
Not my best side. |
I think we may have worn her out. |
Just sitting and waiting to see the changing of the guard. |
They guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year and no matter the weather. |
It was really quite difficult to get really good pictures of the changing of the guard with all of the crowd that was there. But I did my best. |
He's the commanding officer. |
He came over and addressed the crowd. He gave an explanation of the Tomb of the Unknown and why they guard it. He then asked us for silence during the change of guard as it is a solemn proceedure. |
The whole thing was very beautiful and I felt very privileged to be able to witness it. |
The reverence that was there gave the feeling that you were standing on holy ground. |
Every move they made was done with precision. |
I tried to get a picture with just me in it, but I guess I'll have to take what I can get. |
Such beautiful architecture. As the curious person that I am, I had to know what was inside the building. |
It took you into a Greek Parthenon area, with a marble throne. Well, what does one do when presented with a marble throne to sit on? |
You take fabulous pictures, of course. |
Let the games begin!! |
We are bored with the games!! |
In all her royal glory and splendor. |
AWWW, she's so adorable. |
After Arlington, we made our way out to see the Washington D.C. Temple. I am really sad that the pictures I took got lost. There were some really beautiful pictures I got of the temple when we came around a bend in the road. The temple could be seen through the trees and the sunlight through the clouds shown down on it. It truly looked like a light on the hill and a beacon. The one thing we all noticed was the immediate peace that was felt when we first glimpsed the temple. We had spend the better part of two weeks immersed in the church history sites and feeling the peace, joy, and love of the spirit. When we got to Washington D.C. it was gone. Washington D.C. is a cesspool where the spirit just doesn't reside. That feeling was heavily impressed upon us as we parked the D.S.S.V. and got out to go into the visitor's center, it was like a huge weight was lifted. Jaina was the first one to vocally express the difference in feeling. It was a great experience to talk about the differences we felt.
The Washington D.C. Temple was under construction, but still very beautiful to see. We had a lovely time in the Visitor's Center. We watched the Families are Forever video and had a lovely time talking to the sister missionaries. We spent quite a bit of time wandering around the visitor's center, soaking in the feelings of the spirit, and enjoying our Sabbath Day on the temple grounds.
Shall we consult with the great journal entry now? I think we shall.
